First Book-of-the-Year

by Emily

My book club pick: The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. I know some of you may be groaning at the recommendation of a Vietnam war story, but resist the urge to make hasty judgments. A Pulitzer finalist, The Things They Carried is a novel that explores the way a story is told and the concept of truth. You should read this one.

  1. Alrighty! It is in my possession and I'll start it today. Hopefully we can have a discussion or two midway through ... we'll see how the pace is. Please feel free to give updates, dear readers, as to how you and the novel are coming along ...

  3. Y, when you wrote in your blog that you were in the middle of reading the most depressing book ever written, I
    A. assumed that you had already begun reading and
    B. thought your reaction a bit extreme.

Then I read the blog and was relieved.

  4. Ha! Em, I made the exact same assumption. There were a few rough seconds in which my anticipation for TTTC was severely shaken. Thank heavens Y is such a thorough blogger.

I, for one, LOVE This Book. I've been flying through it. I feel like most of the books I really enjoy fall into two categories, where the first overwhelmingly dominates: those that are clever, and those that are true. This one is true.
